The chances of bumping into the men accused of beating him unconscious more than two years ago in a crime police called racially motivated still haunts Dedric Knight and his family.

Four men approached, shouting racial slurs and epithets, Knight later told police. A teenage boy aimed a gun at him during the confrontation as a man bludgeoned Knight in the face, he told officers, but he can’t remember what item they used.

The blow was so hard, Knight had to undergo reconstructive surgery for his injuries.

Knight underwent painful facial reconstructive surgery. Doctors molded a new cheek bone using a titanium plate to replace the shattered bone below his left eye, he said.
When the weather is extreme, very hot or cold, Knight says he feels tinges of pain.
The pain of the surgery and its lingering effects have made Vanessa, his wife, impatient for a new trial.
