REVERE - Revere police say the two men who allegedly beat a Hispanic man with a baseball bat while taunting him with racial slurs Saturday at a Wendy's restaurant drive-thru could be charged with a hate crime.

"If you have language of that nature coupled with an assault and battery, it can be defined as a hate crime," Police Capt. Michael Murphy said.

The man and his wife began to drive away when they realized an error was made in their order, police said.

The man walked back to the drive-thru window, as the restaurant building was closed to customers, to try to fix the problem, police said.

As he was at the window, two men inside one of the waiting cars began yelling at the man and began using racial slurs. "The victim reported that the men shouted at him to get out of the country and used racial epithets offensive to the Hispanic culture," Murphy said.

In defense, the victim informed the suspects that not only is he a U.S. Citizen, but is an eight-year Marine Corps veteran, police said.

The argument escalated before the suspects allegedly got out of their vehicle and began beating the man with a baseball bat.

There is no reference to the number of Democratic Party platforms supporting slavery. There were six from 1840 through 1860.

There is no reference to the number of Democratic presidents who owned slaves. There were seven from 1800 through 1861

There is no reference to the number of Democratic Party platforms that either supported segregation outright or were silent on the subject. There were 20, from 1868 through 1948.

There is no reference to "Jim Crow" as in "Jim Crow laws," nor is there reference to the role Democrats played in creating them. These were the post-Civil War laws passed enthusiastically by Democrats in that pesky 52-year part of the DNC's missing years. These laws segregated public schools, public transportation, restaurants, rest rooms and public places in general (everything from water coolers to beaches).

The reason Rosa Parks became famous is that she sat in the "whites only" front section of a bus, the "whites only" designation the direct result of Democrats.

There is no reference to the formation of the Ku Klux Klan, which, according to Columbia University historian Eric Foner, became "a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party." Nor is there reference to University of North Carolina historian Allen Trelease's description of the Klan as the "terrorist arm of the Democratic Party."

There is no reference to the fact Democrats opposed the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution. The 13th banned slavery. The 14th effectively overturned the infamous 1857 Dred Scott decision (made by Democratic pro-slavery Supreme Court justices) by guaranteeing due process and equal protection to former slaves. The 15th gave black Americans the right to vote.

There is no reference to the fact that Democrats opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1866. It was passed by the Republican Congress over the veto of President Andrew Johnson, who had been a Democrat before joining Lincoln's ticket in 1864. The law was designed to provide blacks with the right to own private property, sign contracts, sue and serve as witnesses in a legal proceeding.

There is no reference to the Democrats' opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1875. It was passed by a Republican Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses Grant. The law prohibited racial discrimination in public places and public accommodations.

There is no reference to the Democrats' 1904 platform, which devotes a section to "Sectional and Racial Agitation," claiming the GOP's protests against segregation and the denial of voting rights to blacks sought to "revive the dead and hateful race and sectional animosities in any part of our common country," which in turn "means confusion, distraction of business, and the reopening of wounds now happily healed."

There is no reference to four Democratic platforms, 1908-20, that are silent on blacks, segregation, lynching and voting rights as racial problems in the country mount. By contrast the GOP platforms of those years specifically address "Rights of the Negro" (1908), oppose lynching (in 1912, 1920, 1924, 1928) and, as the New Deal kicks in, speak out about the dangers of making blacks "wards of the state."

There is no reference to the Democratic Convention of 1924, known to history as the "Klanbake." The 103-ballot convention was held in Madison Square Garden. Hundreds of delegates were members of the Ku Klux Klan, the Klan so powerful that a plank condemning Klan violence was defeated outright. To celebrate, the Klan staged a rally with 10,000 hooded Klansmen in a field in New Jersey directly across the Hudson from the site of the convention. Attended by hundreds of cheering convention delegates, the rally featured burning crosses and calls for violence against African-Americans and Catholics.

There is no reference to the fact that it was Democrats who segregated the federal government, at the direction of President Woodrow Wilson upon taking office in 1913.

There \is a reference to the fact that President Harry Truman integrated the military after World War II.

There is reference to the fact that Democrats created the Federal Reserve Board, passed labor and child welfare laws, and created Social Security with Wilson's New Freedom and FDR's New Deal. There is no mention that these programs were created as the result of an agreement to ignore segregation and the lynching of blacks. Neither is there a reference to the thousands of local officials, state legislators, state governors, U.S. congressmen and U.S. senators who were elected as supporters of slavery and then segregation between 1800 and 1965. Nor is there reference to the deal with the devil that left segregation and lynching as a way of life in return for election support for three post-Civil War Democratic presidents, Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt.

There is no reference that three-fourths of the opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Bill in the U.S. House came from Democrats, or that 80% of the "nay" vote in the Senate came from Democrats. Certainly there is no reference to the fact that the opposition included future Democratic Senate leader Robert Byrd of West Virginia (a former Klan member) and Tennessee Senator Albert Gore Sr., father of Vice President Al Gore.

Last but certainly not least, there is no reference to the fact that Birmingham, Ala., Public Safety Commissioner Bull Connor, who infamously unleashed dogs and fire hoses on civil rights protestors, was in fact--yes indeed--a member of both the Democratic National Committee and the Ku Klux Klan.

The man, Mark E. Dombrowski, 49, was charged with third-degree assault as a hate crime, a felony carrying a maximum four-year prison term. He is accused of shouting ethnic slurs as he beat Luis Ochoa, 53, the president of Solitaridad Latino Americana, in an apparent road-rage incident on April 18 in Montauk.

The police said that Mr. Dombrowski tried to run Mr. Ochoa's car off the road and then, after Mr. Ochoa parked in a driveway, knocked him to the ground, punching and kicking him. The police said witnesses, who provided the suspect's license plate number, reported that the man shouted ethnic slurs during the attack and that it took several people to pull him off Mr. Ochoa.

Mr. Ochoa, who was a lawyer in his native Colombia, is now an ecumenical minister, works as a hotel maintenance man and lives in Montauk. He sustained bruises, cuts and other minor injuries, the police said. His organization lobbies local government on behalf of the South Fork's growing Hispanic community and provides English-language classes for immigrants.

Claiming that Suffolk police and politicians systematically violate the civil rights of Latinos, a Latino rights group has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate county law enforcement and government.

Two high-level officials from the Justice Department's civil rights division flew from Washington, to New York last week to meet with leaders of the group, LatinoJustice.

Justice Department officials said they are reviewing the allegations, which include a laundry list of cases that culminated with the Nov. 8 killing of Marcelo Lucero, an Ecuadorean immigrant in Patchogue. Jamie Hais, a Justice Department spokeswoman, said officials have not decided whether to open a formal inquiry.

But in its nine-page memo to the Justice Department, Manhattan-based LatinoJustice accused Suffolk police of "failing to adequately investigate crimes against Latinos by whites." It said "an epidemic of hate crimes against Latinos had erupted in Suffolk County," even though local police say only one hate crime occurred against Latinos in 2007.

"Latinos in Suffolk County now live in daily fear for their physical well-being, victims of hate crimes at least on a weekly basis," LatinoJustice said.

LatinoJustice also said politicians in Suffolk "have repeatedly inflamed public resentment against the Latino community, even after brutal hate crimes had been committed against it."

The group cited everything from then-county Legis. Michael D'Andre stating publicly "we'll be out with baseball bats" if Latino day laborers showed up in his town, to supposedly anti-immigrant policies by County Executive Steve Levy.

The similarity in their appearance is meant to show the viewer the overall uniformity and collective nature of the Nazi movement.

A mass identity was developed further in the camps by creating an environment in which men could behave like boys. By allowing these developed individuals to revert back to childlike behavior they once again had to undergo identity construction. This reversion to childlike behavior left an individual intellectually stunted, thus a more malleable subject for identity (re)construction. The spirit of camaraderie was nurtured in the camp through the enactment of childish games such as attacking other dormitories with water bombs. If one did not participate in these games they were not being good comrades. The need for such childish diversions arose out of the fact that the “need to be an adult had been dispensed with…”.... In order to be accepted and to build comradeship it was necessary to revert back to a childish state. When Haffner first arrived at the camp he knew that he was an individual capable of his own thoughts and ideas. However, the point of the training camps was to eliminate the ‘I' and replace it with the ‘we.'

Overcompensation : When someone suffers of such inadequacies, then it is very convenient to chose a victim, the "Other" and the "Otherness". You project your own mental dirt and filth in others outside. That is the Psychoanalytic Mechanism called "Projection" by Freud and Friends.

Of course, all this events happen in the "unconscious" and the subject does not understand the origin of his hate in his own inferiority and believes that he is a Genius of Great Thinking or some other foolish theory.

Hitler used a language filled with dirt and filth to discharge in the Jews his own failures in life. His own inferiority of being almost a beggar in Vienna, leaving in a Poorhouse, and later in Munich selling small postcards and being almost nothing in German Society, until he started to Preach Hate, Revenge and Resentment, and there were a lot of people ready for such discourse.

So when someone is nothing, a fool, an intellectual idiot, it is very convenient to invent a "Superior Race" or "Nation" to feel that you are something, and that you belong to something.

If you're looking for an explanation of President-elect Barack Obama's decision to invite conservative evangelical preacher Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration that goes beyond the desire for a kumbaya moment, I've got one: Obama wants to make Warren his Booker T. Washington.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Washington was one of this nation's most influential black leaders. His willingness to try to find common ground with whites who viewed — and treated — blacks as an inferior race made Washington someone presidents reached out to.

Theodore Roosevelt, especially, turned to Washington for advice on "the Negro problem." Taking counsel from "the great accommodationist," as Washington was called, was an act of steam control by the Republican president at a time when the racial divide was undeniably this nation's most explosive problem.

"In all things purely social we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress," Washington said in an 1895 speech that established him as a black leader who was willing to temper the demands of blacks for racial equality.

Theodore Roosevelt believed that blacks were intellectually inferior to whites and as president did little to protect their civil rights. Even so, Washington became one of his advisers on matters of race — and a conduit for the few patronage appointments given to blacks.

Just as Roosevelt used Washington to keep blacks from deserting the Republican Party, Barack Obama's effort to befriend Rick Warren could prevent evangelicals from massing in opposition to his presidency.

Some American police officers and sheriffs are trying to replace the "Immigration and Naturalization Service", which is a Federal Agency. They are trying to perform the same duties, the result is a human catastrophe.

By doing so they cause fear and terror and these areas become like Sparta were the "helots" or slaves were free game for hunting and training for the martial arts of the Spartan aristocracy. It was legal to kill the Helots for training purposes.

I would not call the immigrants in America, second class citizens because they are not citizens and the "bean jumpers" think that they are below chimps, gorillas or orangutans. For the Thugs, these people are below apes, because apes, at leasts are protected species.

Ronald Forte can walk, but not far -- the brain injury means his leg shakes uncontrollably sometimes.

And he can talk, but an hour later, he won't remember what he said.

But despite all that, Forte's mother is feeling a profound joy that the 38-year-old, who was knocked into a coma in a hit-and-run attack in Port Richmond that has been linked to an Election night hate crime, is back home with them for the holidays.

And she's now hoping for a second piece of closure for the holidays -- the possible arrest of the two Staten Island teens authorities believe ran Forte down on a Port Richmond street early Nov. 5 because they mistakenly thought he was black.

"We're happy to have him home with us," said Eileen Forte, the stricken man's mother, in a phone interview with the Advance last night. "That's it. That's all I can say -- God is good."

Garaventa and Nicoletti, who are both white, already face hate crime charges in connection with bludgeoning a 17-year-old Liberian immigrant in the wake of Barack Obama's historic victory, yelling the president-elect's name as they beat the youth with a pipe.

"He needs speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy," Forte's mother, Eileen Fonte said. "He's 38 years old. We have to teach him to do everything again, because of this senseless act."

Forte, who is white, was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt as he walked in the rain that night, and the teens may have thought he was black, sources told the Advance.

STATEN ISLAND (WABC) -- A pair of Staten Island teenagers already facing hate crime charges have been linked to another attack.

The two white teens are charged with attacking a Muslim teen on the night Barack Obama was elected. Now, police and the FBI say they were involved in a hit and run several hours later that same night.

Ralph Nicolleti and Bryan Garaventa were arrested in the beating of 17-year-old Ali Kamara, who they allegedly attacked with a baseball bat.

They are now also charged with running down a supermarket manager they thought was black.

Ronald Forte, a 38-year-old father of five, recently came out of his coma with permanent brain damage. He now uses a walker to get around and has no memory of the attack.

Jasper, Texas — James Roesch is a good decade older than the Mexican teenagers he's trying to keep up with on a green felt indoor soccer field. They gracefully swerve around the goateed, baby-faced 27-year-old, scoring by ricocheting the ball off a rectangular wall indent that serves as a makeshift goal.

Most of the players call Roesch by his first name. They know him as the guy who often supervises youth soccer nights at The Indoor, a recreational soccer facility in Jasper that opened last May. But a few of them also know something about Roesch that he'd prefer to keep quiet: In 1999, he became the imperial wizard, or national leader, of the Knights of the White Kamelia, a Ku Klux Klan group.

Roesch's wife also told the Report that her husband is no longer active with the KWK or any other racist organization. "He used to be; he changed his ways," said April Roesch, who called her own Klan involvement "just a phase" and claimed that getting married in his-and-hers Klan robes wasn't her idea. "I'm an easygoing person, so I did it just to go along," she said. As proof that she has renounced racism, April Roesch cited her volunteering to be adult leader of a local Girl Scout troop with black members. She then expressed her disillusionment with the "invisible empire" of the KKK.

"The Klan is not what you think it is," she said. "It's a bunch of losers."

MW: All of them passed the knife around when they were stabbing me, all I remember is that when they were stabbing me, I passed out, and I guess that’s when they quit because I passed out, because I lost so much blood. I had noticed the stab wounds and they were this big and my meat was hanging out (shows the location on her left thigh). All I can remember was the knife, and I wake up every night now. That’s the only thing I see when I close my eyes is that knife.

MW: I just wanted to get away. I asked one of them if they could let me go, they said no because ‘ain’t no n----rs allowed up here,’ and they were going to kill me. One day, I was asleep in the room, one of them came in and was kicking me and said ‘hey n----r, we got a noose out there for you, want to come look at it? We’re going to hang you, come on.’ I got really scared. I just wanted to get out of there. I was fighting for my life

Judge Thomas Goethals' earlier decision to reduce charges in this case from felony assaults to misdemeanors, which automatically threw out hate crime enhancements, angered members of the Latino community and also drew criticism from the Orange County District Attorney.

Goethals said he was shocked at the behavior of both Kelly and Wilson, former members of the U.S. Army who had been on several tours to Iraq. Wilson is still a reserve officer and trains members of the military on a regular basis.

Prosecutors said the three men launched an unprovoked attack on Alvarado, a janitor on his way to work at In-N-Out in Garden Grove. The men, who had been drinking at an Angels game and partying at a Hustler strip club in Westminster, dragged Alvarado out of his truck and beat him, prosecutors said.

Enter Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. Recently, Levy made an appearance on Long Island’s Channel 12, supposedly, to decry the murder of Lucero. In my view, this was a transparent damage control stunt. For, Levy has used the immigration issue to advance his career.

Levy stated, during his emotionless, wooden speech, that "In the aftermath of this barbaric racial killing, we are left wondering how seven teenagers could allegedly commit such an act." Who’s he fooling? Politicians like him have been straddling the line of bigotry on this toxic topic for years. Given the country’s economic anxiety how can anybody claim to be surprised when the racism lying deep in the hearts of many lead to murder?

Now political provocateurs, like Levy, insist their issue is only illegal immigration. People like him, and CNN’s sanctimonious Lou Dobbs, feign ignorance about how the lines can be easily blurred between the two; in a nation as racist as America. Are they really as obtuse as they pretend?

When Dobbs rails about immigration, speciously insisting that "illegal immigrants" are a terror threat, how can people be surprised kids who grow up in intolerant neighborhoods, and homes, would react with violent hostility toward immigrants, especially, Latinos who are presumed to be here "illegally"? Dobbs has blood on his hands. Pity the Native Americans had no Immigration Department.

Convicted killer Kyle Bormann was sentenced Tuesday to 60 years to life for the shooting death of Brittany Williams, killed last January while waiting in a restaurant drive-thru lane.

Prosecutors in the case alleged the murder of the 21-year-old Williams was a hate crime, saying Bormann was upset by calls made in an NFL playoff game by an African-American official and that's why he killed Williams, who was African-American.

"Why did he choose her out, why did she have to be there at that time?" said the Rev. Jones. "The why is always going to be there."

The most troubling thing for Brittany's family is not knowing why she was murdered. With a family full of ministers, they naturally have turned to their faith.

In July 2007 David Ritcheson committed suicide. The Mexican-American teenager was the victim of a brutal racially motivated attack in a town outside of Houston, Texas, in April 2006. The attackers broke his jaw, burned him with cigarettes, attempted to carve a swastika in his chest, and poured bleach on him.

The most severe injuries were caused when they violently sodomized Ritcheson with a patio umbrella pole. Ritcheson was hospitalized and required thirty surgeries for his injuries, but never fully recovered from the physical and psychological trauma of the attack. He subsequently collaborated with the Anti-Defamation League in creating an antihate program at his high school, and one year after the attack testified before the U.S. House of Representative’s Judiciary Committee in hearings concerning the strengthening of federal hate crime laws.

Three months later Ritcheson committed suicide. The accused were sentenced to life imprisonment and ninety years, respectively, for aggravated sexual assault; an appeal by one of the defendants was dismissed in March 2008.

On August 10, 2007, in Seaside, California, a man posing as an employer, picked up Artemio Santiago García, an immigrant from Oaxaca, Mexico, and drove him to an abandoned building. According to prosecutors, Blevins clubbed Santiago over the head with a flashlight and punched and kicked him repeatedly. Santiago was knocked unconscious and suffered severe injuries.

On June 11, 2008, in Marshfield, Massachusetts, an estimated dozen assailants shouted racial epithets at an African-American man, chased him, and then “kicked, stabbed and hit until he was nearly unconscious,” according to police. Four suspects were detained and faced hate crime and attempted murder charges.

On January 20, 2008, in Omaha, Nebraska, Brittany Williams, a 21-year-old African American college student, was shot to death at a local drivein. Prosecutors noted that the murderer’s “own words—and the circumstances of the shooting—point to the [murder] as being race-based.”

In June 2008, in Eugene, Oregon, three young white men attacked a 59-year-old African-American man, beating him with a baseball bat. According to police reports, the victim suffered “facial, jaw and skull injuries” requiring extensive surgeries. The incident was investigated as a hate crime.

In Seattle, Washington, in March 2008, two white men yelling racial slurs attacked a 24-year-old black man at a bus stop. Police announced two arrests on charges of second-degree assault, firstdegree robbery, and malicious harassment (the latter is based on Washington’s hate crime law).

Following the region's second brutal immigrant killing in six weeks, Rep. Steve Israel and a dozen Hispanic leaders called yesterday for the passage of a federal hate crime law that would allow the U.S. Justice Department to investigate and prosecute such crimes.

"We have learned the tragic lesson of history that words matter and indifference matters even more," said Israel, who was joined by Assemb. Philip Ramos and Suffolk Legis. Ricardo Montano, both Central Islip Democrats.

A federal hate crime law, Israel added, would "make sure the federal government does not show indifference when anyone is discriminated against, when anyone is assaulted."

Israel also raised the possibility of funding either a state or regional hate crime hotline, similar to a phone number set up to report domestic violence.

The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act was approved in the House in May 2007, but stalled in the Senate after President George W. Bush threatened a veto. The proposal, sponsored by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), allows the Justice Department to probe any violent crime linked to race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or gender, if local government does not have such laws.

Or consider the case of Aleksandr Shevchenko, the man charged with a hate crime after fatally beating Satendar Singh at Lake Natoma, California, in 2007. When a jury deadlocked in Shevchenko’s trial, the court instead convicted Singh’s killer for disturbing the peace and simple assault. The court sentenced Shevchenko to 150 days in jail. An August 2, 2008, article published by the Sacramento Bee reported the Sacramento District Attorney’s Office will not retry Shevchenko on the hate crime charge. Because of the verdict, the value of Satendar Singh’s life has been reduced to approximately five months in jail.

Take for example the May 2007 murder of Sean Kennedy, age 20, in Greenville County, South Carolina. Despite the brutal nature of Kennedy’s murder, the man who shouted anti-gay epithets and used his fists to beat his victim to the ground was able to avoid a lengthy jail sentence. Stephen Moller, the man arrested and brought to trial in the Kennedy murder case, had the charges reduced from murder to involuntary manslaughter.

In addition to having the charge downgraded to manslaughter, Moller’s original sentence of five years in prison was first reduced to three years, and then shortened by seven months for time already served. In the end, Moller’s entire prison sentence will most likely come to about a year and a half.

A woman was sexually abused, beaten and humiliated while being held captive in a home for at least a week, sheriff's officials said Monday after making six arrests.

Those arrested, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, are white. The victim, a Charleston woman who was being treated at a hospital Monday, is black. The FBI plans to investigate it as a possible hate crime.

The case heightened racial tensions in the area, even my earlier posting about the death of Perez and at least two other immigrants under similar circumstances drew a reaction blaming "those damned illegals" for sucking off the government's teet. Some felt that Bubaris was scapegoated. Others expressed surprised that the officer was acquitted, siding with the prosecution's case that used police call logs, surveillance video and other evidence showed that only Mr. Bubaris could have taken Mr. Perez to the lonely roadside where he was found dying. Some remembered Sean Bell and drew parallels.

A better parallel would be the 1995 death by beating of homeless Ecuadorian immigrant Manuel Aucaquizhpi. While it was local youths in the area who were accused and subsequently acquitted of major charges in the Dyker Heights, Brooklyn case, this death was also about a clash of the immigrant economy on which predominantly white, upper middle class take advantage of, so long as the immigrants know their place. As soon as their is a social problem, like the homeless immigrants, or alcoholism, then the immigrants become a "problem" and somthing that need to be "cleaned" from the community.

As the anti-immigrant rhetoric gets turned up higher, the sad reality is that these sorts of deaths, mysteriously beaten immigrant workers who outlived their use, according to some, will continue to happen.

A Brooklyn teen-ager was acquitted yesterday and another convicted of only the least serious charge against him in what prosecutors said was the bias-driven beating death of a homeless Ecuadorean immigrant in a Brooklyn park.

After deliberating a day and a half in a monthlong trial, a jury in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn acquitted Steven Ruiz, 19, who is also known as Steven Scarpaci, of murder, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. The other defendant, Joseph Pennachio, 17, was acquitted of murder and manslaughter but convicted of criminally negligent homicide.

But the relatives of Mr. Aucaquizhpi, a half dozen of whom sat in stony silence as the verdict was delivered, bitterly disagreed. "This is not justice," said Miguel Cuzco, a brother-in-law of the victim. "This whole thing is a movie made in Brooklyn."

This is the second death of an Ecuadorean by Hate Murder in less than a month in NYC. Marcelo Lucero died in similar circunstances.

In July 2008 Luis Ramirez was beaten and kicked to death in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, only for being Latino.

After Ramirez’s death, Gladys Limón, of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), began representing Dillman and her family. Limón became alarmed when local law enforcement officials took two weeks to charge the defendants. They claimed it was just a street fight gone bad in spite of witnesses who heard anti-Mexican remarks. She contacted the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division and asked them to monitor the situation. They have since launched their own investigation into the case.

When the Voice of the People organized an anti-immigrant rally, Catholic churches, Dr. Lopez and Ms. Limón, among others, organized a Unity Rally to offer a more tolerant alternative. Mayor Thomas O’Neill attended. Although Limón initially found him to be among those slow to act, she says he did a lot of soul searching and attended the Unity Rally. By calling Ramirez’s killing a ‘tragedy,’ he became allied in the eyes of some as supporting illegal immigrants. During a subsequent town meeting, he was pressed by some residents to resign. Under pressure, he did so. It will go into effect on January 1, 2009. “The climate is so toxic now. When immigrants’ civil rights are violated, there is so much apathy,” says Limón.

According the Monsignor, many Latinos began to feel uncomfortable in Hazelton after the ordinance was passed. Some started attending his church in Shenandoah. “At that time, there was a slight increase in the number of Latino parishioners at our church,” said the Monsignor. “We do everything we can to teach against that mindset.” Regarding Ramirez’ death, the Monsignor said, “The majority of the town came together after the tragedy. Churches have addressed these issues in their sermons. People are just tired now. They want to go back to their lives.”

While that is surely true for most people, Crystal Dillman is left with the feeling that, in fact, things are “a million times worse.” She is left with three children to raise on her own. She says many Latinos have been supportive, but many are also scared. She does not feel safe and cannot imagine how it will be to raise her children in a town where their father was so brutally killed. She feels people have tried to demonize Luis Ramirez and wants people to know he was a good man and a good father, who took care of his family. It is a tragic end to a tragic story playing itself out in Shenandoah and many other cities around the country.

Jose Sucuzhanay, 31, a Brooklyn real estate broker, was viciously beaten with a bottle and a baseball bat by men who yelled anti-Hispanic and anti-gay slurs at him and his brother outside their Brooklyn home Dec. 7. He died Friday night in Elmhurst Hospital.

At a packed park about eight blocks from the Bushwick corner where Sucuzhanay was beaten, a parade of politicians bemoaned other politicians and commentators who they said stoke anti-immigration sentiments to the detriment of immigrant communities.

"I just want to say to every New Yorker," Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Brooklyn) said, "to government people, to personalities in the media, that words have meaning."

Reflections on the Patchogue killing Sucuzhanay's death follows that of Marcelo Lucero, the Patchogue man who police said was beaten and stabbed by a group of seven teenagers Nov. 8. Yesterday protesters carried photographs of both Lucero and Sucuzhanay and many waved Ecuadorean and American flags.

Mr. Obama got a taste of that backlash recently. He drew heavy criticism in the blogosphere for suggesting that conservative cable TV hosts who routinely rail against illegal immigrants are partly to blame for an increase in hate crimes against Hispanic people.

"A certain segment has basically been feeding a kind of xenophobia," Mr. Obama said at a fundraiser in Palm Beach, Fla. "If you have people like Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh ginning things up, it's not surprising that would happen."

I was not very happy to know that the Irish and the Italians were not very Pro Obama in last election. Perhaps the mafia in New York prospered because of the exclusion and hate against the non natives.

Victim of hate-crime attack seeks justice

The chances of bumping into the men accused of beating him unconscious more than two years ago in a crime police called racially motivated still haunts Dedric Knight and his family.

Four men approached, shouting racial slurs and epithets, Knight later told police. A teenage boy aimed a gun at him during the confrontation as a man bludgeoned Knight in the face, he told officers, but he can’t remember what item they used.

Knight underwent painful facial reconstructive surgery. Doctors molded a new cheek bone using a titanium plate to replace the shattered bone below his left eye, he said.

VALHALLA, NY (CBS) ― Two teenagers are under arrest after an altercation at Westchester Community College, and one is charged with felony assault as a hate crime.

According to police, the incident began in the administration building, where the victim, a 19-year old black student, was waiting on line. Authorities said he heard four young white men referring to each other using the "n" word.

The victim told the young men to stop using the epithet.

As the victim left the administration building, the four young white men followed him outside and at least one of the those young men directed the "n" word at the victim.

Shannon Finley and Charles Ryan Crostley, both 27, face up to life in prison if convicted of charges that they murdered 24-year-old Brandon McClelland by running him over and dragging him beneath a pickup truck after the three went on a late-night beer run.

Finley also was indicted on evidence tampering charges alleging he attempted to wash McClelland's blood from the undercarriage of the truck, while Crostley was charged with retaliating against a witness in the case, authorities said. Both remain in jail, unable to post bond.

In December 2005, Dennis Hastert, then House speaker, pandering to the hard right of the GOP, allowed Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) to push through the House a truly draconian piece of legislation that would have turned all undocumented immigrants and the priests and nuns who serve them into felons.

The Sensenbrenner legislation triggered the historic immigrant marches in the spring of 2006, where millions chanted, tellingly, “Today we march; tomorrow we vote!” Nativist-haters and talk-radio demagogues who don’t like to “Press 1 for English” mobilized their cultural conservative base, and cynics in the Republican Party thought they had a beautiful little “wedge” issue. They would paint Democrats as pandering to Mexican-Americans by supporting “amnesty for lawbreakers.” Republican tax activist Grover Norquist warned of the consequences, saying, “We can’t afford to do to the Hispanics what we did to the Roman Catholics in the late 19th Century: tell them we don’t like them and lose their vote for a hundred years.”

Ignoring his warning, the Republican National Committee covered the nation during the 2006 elections with mailers and TV commercials painting the Democrats as soft on illegal Immigration, to no avail. The GOP lost the House and Senate, and many anti-immigrant hard-liners were defeated.

This was a crime almost beyond comprehending in its sheer, cold viciousness. The killing of Marcelo Lucero now joins the sordid roster of Long Island crimes that drew national attention. Think of John Esposito, who in 1992 held a 10-year-old girl captive for 17 days in an underground bunker. Think of Joel Rifkind, who in 1993 was convicted of murdering 17 women in the state's largest case of serial killings. Think of the 1988 murders of Seymour and Arlene Tankleff in their Belle Terre home. Think of Joey Buttafuoco and Amy Fisher, who in 1992 defined Long Island sleaze for the entire nation.

And of Matthew Solomon, who in 1987 killed his wife on Christmas Eve and then brazenly led the search effort to find her. And Colin Ferguson, who in 1995 killed six persons aboard a Long Island Rail Road commuter train. And of William Sodders, age 21, who in 1997 randomly shot a fireman out for a jog. And of Dr. Michael Swango, who poisoned three patients in a Long Island hospital.

All these were relentlessly-played national stories. But each of these killers had a motive, no matter how twisted. In its way, the killing of Marcelo Lucero stands alone, seven men against one, all driven by hatred. Is there any other word for it? And it appears to have been carried out, as the police and prosecutors have said, for sport.
