The three refuges are the dark ovals in Spain, the Balkans, and Ukraine or the Black Sea. The North of Europe was covered by Glaciers.

How the Y-DNA haplogroups expanded in Europe from the Ice Age Refuges when the climate was warmer, following the arrows to the North :

The R1b expanded to Spain and France, the North Atlantic and the British Isles.
The I expanden to Central Europe and Scandinavia.
The R1a expanded to Eastern Europe, Russia and the Orient.

Note : This R1a expansion is controversial and some scientists believe that it was original from the East and expanded to the West. To complicate things you find the theories of "Aryan" populations, so politics, nationalism and racism intrude in what should be strictly scientific. I hope that in a few years these things are settled and we finally find very scientific theories about whether the Aryans existed or not, and who they were genetically and racially.

My guess is that we will see many lies that were usuful for Empires like the British Empire and the Third Reich or Nazis in Germany. The first results of Genetics and Archeology show that things are not so foolish as these Empires proclaimed.

And Empires and Racial Myths to support them still exist and will exist. These political mythological complexes are not dead.
