March because you are honorable and have value and merit.

As a honest person you are distinguished.

As a Minority, you deserve esteem or respect.

March because of Self-Respect !!

March to push small projects of bills like the DREAM Act. March to show Numbers and Force.

March to protest the deaths of 25 policemen in the last years after Tim McVeigh. These deaths due to Racist Right Wingers.

March to protest the brutal deaths of Many Latinos and Minorities. March to protest against the harassment and mistreatment of Minorities.

I am aware that the trials against Racial Murderers and Right Wing Extremists that kill Policemen should be decided by a Jury with the Help of Judges, Prosecutors, Defense Lawyers, District Attorneys and Representatives of the "People" and that they should not be pressed or pressured. But I congratulate you for your fight for Kindness and Friendliness among Races, and for your excellent information that I read everyday.

It is a good thing that Latinos, Blacks, Immigrants, Asians, Native Americans and many others go Tomorrow May 1st to Demonstrations.

Many Nice and Kind White People can also go to demonstrate for the Kindness and Friendship to Minorities. And a Rejection to Hatred, Racism, Sadism and Brutality.

Even White Policemen are threatened by this Huge Tsunami of Right Wing Extremism, Racism and Violence. If I was the wife of a White Policeman then I would demonstrate with the Minorities and Latinos.

I would also advise to the Demonstrators to be Peaceful, Calmed, Moderate in their Demands of Petitions, to be Polite, Tranquil, Prudent, etc ...

And to have a lot of Caution, so as not to enrage the Lunatic Fringe of Racists and Haters. Do not respond to their insults, slurs, epithets, or whatever yelling of obscenities.

Why endanger the life or integrity of a child, woman or old folks answering to their foolishness. ??

Richard Poplawski killed three policemen in Pittsburgh, who had posted numerous racist and anti-Semitic messages on the white supremacist website Stormfront and elsewhere

Joshua Cartwright, a reported member of the Florida National Guard who allegedly killed two Okaloosa County, Fla., sheriff’s deputies in a shootout at a gun club last Saturday believed the U.S. government was conspiring against him and was “severely disturbed that Barack Obama had been elected president,” his wife told investigators.

In the 14 years since that bombing — which remains the worst act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history — 25 law enforcement officers have lost their lives to white supremacist violence. “We all know that white supremacists lash out violently against people of other races and religions and sexual orientations,” Pitcavage told Hatewatch. “We often forget that they also strike out against the people trying to protect us all. Sometimes spontaneously, sometimes planned, they regularly target law enforcement officers across the country.”

The officers who died in Pittsburgh were Paul Sciullo III, 37, Stephen Mayhle, 29, and Eric Kelly, 41. Sciullo and Mayhle were ambushed when they arrived at the house where Poplawski lived with his mother. Kelly was shot when he responded to help.

The Intelligence Report profiled the 15 officers killed by extremists between 1997 and 2004. With help from Pitcavage, Hatewatch compiled a list, presented here in reverse chronological order, of the seven law enforcement officers who died between 2005 and the tragedy in Pittsburgh:

• Hillsborough County, Fla., Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Harrison, 55, on Aug. 15, 2007, by a white supremacist.

• Bastrop, La., Police Detective Sgt. John Smith, 40, on Aug. 10, 2007, by a member of the racist prison gang Aryan Circle.

• Bastrop, La., Police Detective Sgt. Charles “Chuck” Wilson, 34, on Aug. 10, 2007, by a member of the racist prison gang Aryan Circle.

• Utah Department of Corrections Officer Stephen Anderson, 60, on June 25, 2007, by a Utah State Prison inmate with ties to the Aryan Brotherhood and other white supremacist prison gangs.

How Many More Cops Must Die?

The national news has been missing the story that, here in Florida, we just had a cop-killing that bears eerie similarity to the recent case in Pittsburgh, in which Richard Poplawski allegedly shot and killed three police officers and tried to kill as many as nine others before being arrested. Afterward, much was made of Poplawski's belief that President Obama would soon be taking his guns away.

And sure enough, buried in the 12th paragraph of the AP story linked above, is the Okaloosa sheriff's comment that "Cartwright was interested in militia groups and weapons training." When Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's office put out a report warning of growing "right-wing extremism," she was pilloried in the conservative media. Glenn Beck went totally haywire ... well, more haywire than usual. Michael Savage sued the DHS. It was all good for publicity. But all it did was tacitly tie the kooky ideology espoused by Beck and Savage to the explicitly dangerous actions of men like Poplawski and now, Cartwright.

Beck's and Savage's followers seem equally ignorant of the stupidity of their actions. At the myriad tea parties held a couple weeks ago, many folks held up signs proudly declaring themselves "Right-wing extremists," a reference to the DHS report. I attended the tea party in Fort Lauderdale, and saw several signs of that ilk.

But the far-right's anchoring themselves to the even-farther-right is hardly the big takeaway from all this. With Poplawski and now Cartwright, and who knows how many others to follow, the point to be made is that this sort of right-wing extremism does exist and represents a serious threat to both police officers and law-abiding citizens that disagree with the viewpoints of these pissants. (Recall the case of Jim Adkisson, who pleaded guilty this past February to marching into a Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tenn., to "go kill liberals." He murdered two people with a sawed-off shotgun and wounded seven others before the church congregation wrestled him to the ground.)

But something needs to be done, and soon. Burt Lopez had five kids. Warren York had a 10-year-old. Joshua Cartwright was a waste of humanity who beat his wife. The difference is huge.

Community Mourns Officers

Cartwright, a member of the US Army reserves, was laid of from his job on Friday, and his wife says he believed the government was conspiring against him. According to the report, he was also "severely disturbed that Barack Obama had been elected President."

A joint memorial service for Lopez and York will be held Wednesday from 5pm-9pm at the Crestview Community Center.

The funeral service for Deputy Burt Lopez, who leaves behind a wife and five children ranging from eight to 28 years old, is scheduled for Thursday at 3pm at Central Baptist Church in Crestview.

The service for Deputy "Skip" York, a husband and father of a 10-year-old son, will be held Friday at 10am at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Fort Walton Beach.

Let's Demonstrate on May First of 2009 with Prudence, Caution and Wisdom. But do not push for Impossible Legislative Agendas that would destroy Mr Obama. And let's be peaceful.

The Democratic Party is larger than just the Latino Component. There are Blacks, Asians, Native Americans, the Educated Whites, the Many Millions of Noble Whites, the Millions of Kind White People, The Intelligent White People and others. There are many more millions than the Latinos, and do not forget those that dislike Religious Extremism and Christian Talibans.

The United States is larger than the Democratic Party and the Latinos combined.

And the World is larger than the USA.

So I would love to see "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" ( the CIR ) because it is Humane, Kind, Natural, and good for the U. S. Economy.

But given the Level of Hate, Sadism and Brutality The CIR is a dangerous proposition, project or bill to send to Congress.

But for the Good of All People of America and the World, I hope that Mr Obama does not send that bill to Congress.

Because then Mr Obama and his party would fall in a trap or quagmire. The Republicans would be the happiest with all the Racists and Scoundrels activated and energized.

Mr Obama would give a banner to a Republican Party that is in Extreme Ideological Poverty, Absolute Povery of Ideas.

What is better than to have a "Common Enemy", and "Enemy of America" in Latinos.

To revive all the Forces of Scoundrels, to Energize haters.

The best beneficiaries would be the TV Merchants of Hate and TV Peddlers of Fear.

Their audiences, ratings and earnings would immediately increase.

Hate and Fear are powerful forces.

Mr Obama would paralyze Congress and Legislation and even his administration with this imprudent project.

And the Whole World would suffer from an America that is paralyzed by stupid and imbecile haters. And we would harm the legislative agendas of Blacks, Asians, Native Americans and many millions of Kind and Noble Whites.

A study by Cavalli-Sforza using 120 blood polymorphisms provides information on genetic distances of the various continents. For the purpose of simplicity, admixed populations such as those of North Africa and West Asia were omitted from the analysis.

The largest genetic distance between any two continents is between Africa and Oceania at 24.7. Based on physical appearance this may be counterintuitive, since Australians and New Guineans resemble Africans with dark skin and sometimes frizzy hair. This resemblance is probably an example of convergent evolution. This large figure for genetic distance reflects the relatively long Isolation of Australia and New Guinea since the end of the Last glacial maximum when the continent was further isolated from mainland Asia due to rising sea levels.

The next largest genetic distance is between Africa and the Americas at 22.6%. This is expected since the longest geographic distance by land is between Africa and South America. The shortest genetic distance at 8.9% is between Asia and the Americas indicating a more recent separation.

Africans are the most divergent continent with all other groups being more related to each other than to Africa. This is expected in accordance with the Recent single-origin hypothesis. The population most closely related to Africans are Europeans. However, this short distance indicates significant interaction and gene exchange between Africa and Europe in the not so distant past. Europe has a genetic variation in general about three times less than that of other continents.

Even though Europeans are the non-African group closest to Africans, Europeans are most closely related to East Asians. As the genetic distance from Africa to Europe (16.6) is shorter than the genetic distance from Africa to East Asia (20.6) Cavalli-Sforza proposes that both Asian and African populations contributed to the settlement of Europe which began 40,000 years ago. The overall contributions from Asia and Africa were estimated to be around two-thirds and one-third, respectively.

Populations in China, mainly Han, show remarkable heterogeneity of Gm allotypes from north to south and contrast sharply to Korean and Japanese populations, which are considerably more homogenous with respect to these genetic markers. The center of dispersion of the Gm afb1b3 gene characterizing southern Mongoloids has been identified as the Guangxi and Yunnan area in the southwest of China.

3. The Gm ab3st gene, which is found with its the highest incidence among the northern Baikal Buriats, flows in all directions. People love sports and are always inventing new variations. Now we are studying sports that involve the use of heads.

I know that in Ancient Egypt Pharaos like Ramses II ( the Great ) practiced the sport of smashing nuts on the heads of prisoners. Others posted heads on picks and on the tops of City Walls.

In the Pacific Islands and the Amazon Basin the sport of hunting heads was much practiced, and there was another companion hobby of shrinking the heads of enemies in boiling pots, with special shrinking herbs.

In England they invented the most important invention of all times the "Football", that is Soccer, and English Football has beautiful movements like shooting the ball with your head in between the goalposts, and under the crossbar that defines the door or arch of the other team.

I feel somewhat guilty and repentant that I use some sarcasms against Republicans. It is that I love to laugh at idiots ( a small percentage of Republicans ) and I can not resist the temptation to attack.

I pray for the day when Republicans return to Lincoln and to such Noble and Kind People of the South that fought for Civil Rights.

There are many Good Republicans that despise meanness against Minorities.

I would have loved if Mr Michael Steele had ratified the accusation of "Incendiary" against a Radio Agitator.

I would have preferred a Division of Republicans than the meekness of kneeling before the worst of intolerance.

The Republican Party needs the Hate against Latinos in order to revive, revitalize and reinvigorate, for a "Republican Revival". That is the Blood of Youth, because Latinos are mostly in Elementary Schools, in High Schools, and now want Higher Education in Colleges and Universities.

Latinos are "Youth Blood" and a big part of a Great Future for America. But Republicans want to drink that blood with their Racism and Hatred. Even if they expulse and evict those Youngsters out of America.

So, Mr Obama should be careful not to paralyze Government and his Administration Legislative Agenda with a "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" because that is what these Merchants of Hatred in Racist TV want in order to agitate the masses of ignorants, of fools, idiots and losers, the boxes of Inferiority Complexes.

The "Immigration Reform" would increase the profits of the Merchants of Hate, the Peddlers of Fear, in Racist TV.

When you are a failure in life, filled with inferiority complexes, a loser, nothing is better than to choose a defenseless victim and become a bully, then you are the Superior Race, and suddenly you got a lot value and self respect, even if you are trash.

"Immigration Reform" is a "Pandora's Box" for Mr Obama, because there is too much Racism and Hatred. This needs a much more mature country, and a more mature Republican Party in times of Economic Prosperity and not of Economic Suffering.

Antisemitism

After the 1936 election, Coughlin increasingly expressed sympathy for the fascist policies of Hitler and Mussolini as an antidote to Bolshevism. His CBS radio broadcasts became suffused with antisemitic themes. He blamed the Depression on an "international conspiracy of Jewish bankers", and also claimed that Jewish bankers were behind the Russian Revolution. On November 27, 1938, he said "There can be no doubt that the Russian Revolution ... was launched and fomented by distinctively Jewish influence."

He began publication of a newspaper, Social Justice, during this period, in which he printed antisemitic polemics such as The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Like Joseph Goebbels, Coughlin claimed that Marxist atheism in Europe was a Jewish plot. The December 5, 1938 issue of Social Justice included an article by Coughlin which closely resembled a speech made by Goebbels on September 13, 1935 attacking Jews, atheists and communists, with some sections being copied verbatim by Coughlin from an English translation of the Goebbels speech. At a rally in the Bronx in 1938, he gave a Nazi salute and said, "When we get through with the Jews in America, they'll think the treatment they received in Germany was nothing."

On November 20, 1938, two weeks after Kristallnacht, when Jews across Germany were attacked and killed, and Jewish businesses, homes and synagogues burned, Coughlin said "Jewish persecution only followed after Christians first were persecuted."

After this speech, and as his programs became more antisemitic, some radio stations, including those in New York and Chicago, began refusing to air his speeches without pre-approved scripts; in New York, his programs were cancelled by WINS and WMCA, leaving Coughlin to broadcasting on the Newark part-time station WHBI.

This made Coughlin a hero in Nazi Germany, where papers ran headlines claiming "America Is Not Allowed to Hear the Truth". On December 18, 1938 two thousand of Coughlin's followers marched in New York protesting potential asylum law changes that would allow more Jews (including refugees from Hitler's persecution) into the US, chanting, "Send Jews back where they came from in leaky boats!" and "Wait until Hitler comes over here!" The protests continued for several months. Donald Warren, using information from the FBI and German government archives, has also argued that Coughlin received indirect funding from Nazi Germany during this period.

After 1936, Coughlin began supporting an organization called the Christian Front, which claimed him as an inspiration. In January 1940, the Christian Front was shut down when the FBI discovered the group was arming itself and "planning to murder Jews, communists, and 'a dozen Congressmen'" and eventually establish, in J. Edgar Hoover's words, "a dictatorship, similar to the Hitler dictatorship in Germany". Coughlin publicly stated, after the plot was discovered, that he still did not "disassociate himself from the movement", and though he was never linked directly to the plot, his reputation suffered a fatal decline.


Cancellation of radio show

At its peak in the early 1930s, Coughlin's radio show was phenomenally popular. His office received up to 80,000 letters per week from listeners, and his listening audience was estimated to rise at times to as much as a third of the nation. Coughlin is often credited as one of the major demagogues of the 20th century for being able to influence politics through broadcasting, without actually holding a political office himself.

Boyea (1995) shows that the Roman Catholic Church did not approve of Coughlin. The Vatican, the Apostolic Delegation in Washington, D.C., and the archbishop of Cincinnati all wanted him silenced. They recognized that only Coughlin's superior, Detroit Bishop Michael Gallagher, had the canonical authority to curb him, but Gallagher supported the "Radio Priest". Due to Gallagher's autonomy and the prospect of Coughlin leading a schism, the Roman Catholic leadership did nothing.

A radio battle was fought in the late 1930s between The Reverend Walton E. Cole, a Unitarian minister in Toledo, Ohio, and Coughlin. Cole tried to prevail upon the Roman Catholic hierarchy to have Coughlin's inflammatory broadcasts stopped. Walton Cole’s widow, Lorena M. Cole, donated his papers to the Claremont School of Theology with personal notes and reminiscences about this tense episode.

In spite of his early support for Roosevelt, Coughlin's populist message contained bitter attacks on the Roosevelt administration. The administration decided that although the First Amendment protected free speech, it did not necessarily apply to broadcasting, because the radio spectrum was a "limited national resource" and regulated as a publicly-owned commons. New regulations and restrictions were created to force Coughlin off the air. For the first time, operating permits were required of those who were regular radio broadcasters. When Coughlin's permit was denied, he was temporarily silenced.

Coughlin worked around the restriction by purchasing air time and having his speeches played via recordings. However, having to buy the time on individual stations seriously reduced his reach and strained his resources.

According to Marcus' book, Coughlin's opposition to the repeal of a neutrality-oriented arms-embargo law triggered more successful efforts to force him off the air. In October 1939, one month after the invasion of Poland, the Code Committee of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) adopted new rules which placed "rigid limitations on the sale of radio time to spokesman of controversial public issues". Manuscripts were required to be submitted in advance. Radio stations were threatened with the loss of their licenses if they failed to comply. This ruling was clearly aimed at Coughlin due to his opposition to prospective American involvement in World War II. As a result, the September 23, 1939 issue of Social Justice stated that he had been forced from the air "...by those who control circumstances beyond my reach" (pp 173-177).

Coughlin reasoned that although the government had assumed the right to regulate any on-air broadcasts, the First Amendment still guaranteed and protected freedom of the written press. He could still print his editorials without censorship in his own newspaper, Social Justice. However, the Roosevelt administration stepped in again, this time revoking his mailing privileges[clarification needed] and making it impossible for Coughlin to deliver the papers to his readers. He had the right to publish whatever he wanted, but not the right to use the United States Post Office Department to deliver it.

The lack of a conduit to his followers seriously reduced his influence, and after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the declaration of war in December 1941, the anti-interventionist movement (such as the America First Committee) began to sputter out, and isolationists like Coughlin were seen as being sympathetic to the enemy. In 1942, the new bishop of Detroit ordered Coughlin to stop his controversial political activities and confine himself to his duties as a parish priest. Coughlin complied and remained the pastor of the Shrine of the Little Flower until retiring in 1966. He refused numerous interview opportunities, and continued to write pamphlets denouncing Communism until his death in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1979, at the age of 88.

OK so I'm a HUGE biology and anthropology geek and student and I decided to do a little slide show that ran through the line of human evolution from the first lobe-finned fish to us. Please remember that I am just a student not an expert... yet :P, so if you see a mistake or just happen to have a better picture or know of a more relevant fossil yell my way. This video begins with a survey of anatomically important concepts and landmarks in the analysis of primate skulls and teeth so that the fossils can be discussed accurately. The discussion of fossils begins with Aegyptopithecus from the Oligocene and continues through the Miocene and Pliocene using casts for a sample of the fossil forms and some slides for the newer Ardipithecus and Australopithecus anamensis.

The video then discusses the anatomy of the femur and pelvis in terms of the development of bipedalism, using cast material from the Australopithecus afarensis called Lucy. Some time is devoted to a discussion of afarensis dentition and the development of modern dental characteristics. The differences between the gracile and robust forms of Australopithecines are then demonstrated. The presentation ends with a brief introduction of the habilis form as the next stage of development of modern Humans. All this material is shot in the setting of a university physical anthropology lab.

Hominid Evolution 1: The Early Stages - PREVIEW



This video picks up the account of human evolution with Homo Habilis, the earliest currently accepted member of our genus and describes the similarities and differences between this form and the Australopithecines. It then continues with a discussion and demonstration of the features of the African Homo Erectus and the Asian forms including the material from Java and from China. In terms of hominid development in Europe, maps and slides are used to discuss the possible new very early hominids from Spain at Orche and the material from Atapuerca.

Several different theoretical positions about what to call the European material are presented and the casts of several are discussed in detail. As we move on to the Neandertals, the Out-of-African and Multi-regional theories are presented with supporting data and criticisms of each. A cast of the new Solo skull from Polowayo in Java is discussed. The Near Eastern material on Neandertals and early modern Homo sapiens is covered, in addition to the spread of early moderns across Europe and Asia. The video ends, not with conclusions, but with questions about the interpretation of fossils and the differing theories about the development of modern forms.

The skulls, dug up near a village called Herto, fill a major gap in the human fossil record, an era at the dawn of modern humans when the facial features and brain cases we recognize today as human first appeared.

The fossils date precisely from the time when biologists using genes to chart human evolution predicted that a genetic "Eve" lived somewhere in Africa and gave rise to all modern humans.

"We've lacked intermediate fossils between pre-humans and modern humans, between 100,000 and 300,000 years ago, and that's where the Herto fossils fit," said paleoanthropologist Tim White, professor of integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and a co-leader of the team that excavated and analyzed the discovery site. "Now, the fossil record meshes with the molecular evidence."

"With these new crania," he added, "we can now see what our direct ancestors looked like."

Homo sapiens idaltu is an extinct subspecies of Homo Sapiens that lived almost 160,000 years ago in Pleistocene Africa. Idaltu is the Afar word for "elder, first born".

Location of discovery
The fossilized remains of H. s. idaltu were discovered at Herto Bouri in the Middle Awash site of Ethiopia's Afar Triangle in 1997 by Tim White, but were first unveiled in 2003. Herto Bouri is a region of Ethiopia under volcanic layers. By using radioisotope dating, the layers date between 154,000 and 160,000 years old. Three well preserved crania are accounted for, the best preserved being from an adult male (BOU-VP-16/1) having a brain capacity of 1450 cm3 (compared to average modern human adult male brain size of around 1260 cm3). The other crania include another partial adult male and a six year old child.

These fossils differ from those of chronologically later forms of early H. sapiens such as Cro-Magnon found in Europe and other parts of the world in that their morphology has many archaic features not typical of H. sapiens (although modern human skulls do differ across the globe). Despite the archaic features, these specimens are postulated to represent the direct ancestors of modern Homo sapiens sapiens which, according to the "Recent African Origin (RAO)" or "Out-Of-Africa" theory, developed shortly after this period (Khoisan mitochondrial divergence dated not later than 110,000 B.P.) in Eastern Africa, and as such, to be the oldest representative of the H. sapiens species found so far.

A 2005 potassium-argon dating of volcanic tuff associated with the Omo remains showed them to date from about 195,000 years ago, making them still older than the Idaltu fossils and the earliest known remains of anatomically modern humans.

The second episode then leaps forward to a time when Paranthropus boisei, Homo habilis and Homo rudolfensis co-exist. H. habilis is depicted as an intelligent omnivore that is more adaptable than its herbivorous neighbours, being able to eat tall grasses in difficult times. It only briefly shows the H. rudolfensis, remarking that albeit they are taller, they are very similar to the H. habilis.

In the fourth episode we leap forward to a time when Homo heidelbergensis is living in Britain. H. Heidelbergensis is depicted as intelligent and sensitive but lacking in the ability to comprehend an afterlife.

Next, we see Homo neanderthalensis hunting mammoths during the Ice Age, and learn that they are intelligent but lack the imagination of modern humans. Finally, we see modern Homo sapiens (represented by Bushmen) in Africa, and glimpse the cave painters of Europe.

Some paleanthropologists believe the African H. heidelbergensis is merely an archaic form of modern humans. Also whether H. neanderthalensis are actually a sub-species of Homo sapiens is also controversial among paleanthropologists.

Mehrgarh is more than 9000years old and is located in northern Balochistan. It's thought be the worlds first urban settlement and was the forerunner of the more famous Indus valley Civilization.

Recently even evidence of teeth drilling for treatment purposes were also discovered;this is certainly the worlds very first evidence of dental care. Its bosomed female statuettes are peculiar to this site.

Located near the Bolan Pass, to the west of the Indus River valley and between the present-day Pakistani cities of Quetta, Kalat and Sibi, Mehrgarh was discovered in 1974 by an archaeological team directed by French archaeologist Jean-François Jarrige, and was excavated continuously between 1974 and 1986. The earliest settlement at Mehrgarh—in the northeast corner of the 495-acre (2.00 km2) site—was a small farming village dated between 7000 BC–5500 BC.

Lifestyle and technology

(Musée Guimet, Paris).Early Mehrgarh residents lived in mud brick houses, stored their grain in granaries, fashioned tools with local copper ore, and lined their large basket containers with bitumen. They cultivated six-row barley, einkorn and emmer wheat, jujubes and dates, and herded sheep, goats and cattle. Residents of the later period (5500 BC to 2600 BC) put much effort into crafts, including flint knapping, tanning, bead production, and metal working. The site was occupied continuously until about 2600 BC.[2]

In April 2006, it was announced in the scientific journal Nature that the oldest (and first early Neolithic) evidence in human history for the drilling of teeth in vivo (i.e. in a living person) was found in Mehrgarh.[3]

Archaeological significance

Mehrgarh is now seen as a precursor to the Indus Valley Civilization. "Discoveries at Mehrgarh changed the entire concept of the Indus civilization," according to Ahmad Hasan Dani, professor emeritus of archaeology at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, "There we have the whole sequence, right from the beginning of settled village life." According to Catherine Jarrige of the Centre for Archaeological Research Indus Balochistan, Musée Guimet, Paris.

The Kachi plain and in the Bolan basin are situated at the Bolan peak pass, one of the main routes connecting southern Afghanistan, eastern Iran, the Balochistan hills and the Indus valley. This area of rolling hills is thus located on the western edge of the Indus valley, where, around 2500 BC, a large urban civilization emerged at the same time as those of Mesopotamia and the ancient Egyptian empire.

For the first time in the Indian subcontinent, a continuous sequence of dwelling-sites has been established from 7000 BC to 500 BC, (as a result of the) explorations in Pirak from 1968 to 1974; in Mehrgarh from 1975 to 1985; and of Nausharo from 1985 to 1996.

The Natufian culture existed in the Mediterranean region of the Levant. It was a Mesolithic culture, but unusual in that it was sedentary, or semi-sedentary, before the introduction of agriculture. The Natufian communities are possibly the ancestors of the builders of the first Neolithic settlements of the region, which may have been the earliest in the world. There is no evidence for the deliberate cultivation of cereals, but people at the time certainly made use of wild cereals. Animals hunted include the gazelles. The culture is a successor of Kebaran culture.

Although the picture may change as more research is done, there does not seem to have been any similarly advanced culture at the time in the whole Near East.

The name "Natufian" was chosen by Dorothy Garrod who studied the Shuqba cave in Wadi an-Natuf, about halfway between Jaffa and Ramallah.

Dating

Radiocarbon dating places this culture just before the end of the Pleistocene, in the period 12,500 to 9,500 BC.

The period is commonly split into two subperiods: Early Natufian (12,500–10,800 BC) and Late Natufian (10,800–9500 BC). The Late Natufian most likely occurred in tandem with the Younger Dryas (10,800 to 9500 BC). In the Levant, there are more than a hundred kinds of cereals, fruits, nuts and other edible parts of plants, and the flora of the Levant during the Natufian period was not the dry, barren, and thorny landscape of today, but parkland and woodland.

Settlements

Settlements occur in the woodland belt where oak and Pistacia species dominated. The underbrush of this open woodland was grass with high frequencies of grain. The high mountains of Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon, the steppe areas of the Negev desert in Israel and Sinai, and the Syro-Arabian desert in the east put up only small Natufian living areas due to both their lower carrying capacity and the company of other groups of foragers who denuded this large region.

The habitations of the Natufian are semi-subterranean, often with a dry-stone foundation. The superstructure was probably made of brushwood. No traces of mudbrick have been found, which became common in the following Pre-Pottery Neolithic A, abbreviated PPN A. The round houses have a diameter between 3 and 6 meters, they contain a central round or subrectangular fireplace.

In Ain Mallaha traces of postholes have been identified. "Villages" can cover over 1,000 square meters. Smaller settlements have been interpreted by some researchers as camps. Traces of rebuilding in almost all excavated settlements seem to point to a frequent relocation, indicating a temporary abandonment of the settlement. Settlements have been estimated to house 100–150, but there are three categories: small, median, and large, ranging from 15 sq. m to 1,000 sq. m of people. There are no definite indications of storage facilities.

Sedentism

A semi-sedentary life may have been made possible by abundant resources due to a favourable climate at the time, with a culture living from hunting, fishing and gathering, including the use of wild cereals. Tools were available for making use of cereals: flint-bladed sickles for harvesting, and mortars, grinding stones, and storage pits.

Development of agriculture

According to one theory, it was a sudden change in climate, the Younger Dryas event (ca. 10800 to 9500 BC), that inspired the development of agriculture. The Younger Dryas was a 1,000-year-long interruption in the higher temperatures prevailing since the last ice age, which produced a sudden drought in the Levant. This would have endangered the wild cereals, which could no longer compete with dryland scrub, but upon which the population had become dependent to sustain a relatively large sedentary population. By artificially clearing scrub and planting seeds obtained from elsewhere, they began to practice agriculture.
