Super consolation pills : Look at the bright side of things : How I avoid Suicide and Depression after the Great Republican Victory in the Elections - How I control my emotions and become fully operative after Great Fools win in the elections

.

Trick 1 :

Look at the INTRADE.COM prices for bets : you observe the "Last Price", the "Ask" and "Bid" prices for several candidates ( to win a bet of $100 ), this tells me that Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, Tom Tancredo, Carl Paladino and other repulsive and repellent figures are going to lose on November 2.

Also Christine O'Donnell and Joe Miller are  going to lose .... In the case of Miller, he is defeated by a less dangerous Republican.

Trick 2 :

Read History, particularly the books about Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal .....  Great Men have been disrespected by the populace and the rabble ..... ( like Mr Barack Obama ) ..... Greatness is not recognized and acknowledged during the life of a Great Statestman.

Even the Great Winston Churchill was despised by the British after the Second World War and he lost the elections.

Trick 3 :

History and Politics is a pendulum : If Republicans take over then this is like when the Ayatollah Komeini took over in Iran, a Great Leap backwards .... History is filled with these regressions that are very similar to the regressions of the planets, when they seem to stop and advance backwards.

Trick 4 :

If everything fails and you are still depressed and suicidal then try some Good Magic, Astrology a Crystall Ball, a Tarot, some Divinations, etc ...

What to avoid :

Avoid Priests and Pastors, they are Great Exploiters and may lead you to the Tea Party or Republican Party in General. These priests and pastors are very dangerous for the good health of your wallet.

Avoid pacts with the Devil, changing History is not worth the loss of your soul.

The Republican Party could use some adults

Some excerpts :

In an interview last week with National Journal's Major Garrett, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was asked what his priority would be for Republicans after their expected gains in Tuesday's election.

The possibilities were many: Balance the budget and pay down the debt? Fight the terrorists and reform entitlements? Support and defend the Constitution?

No, McConnell's priorities were elsewhere. "The single most important thing we want to achieve," he said, "is for President Obama to be a one-term president."

The single most important thing?

This bit of truth-telling, reminiscent of McConnell's lament in August that "I wish we had been able to obstruct more" of Obama's agenda, underscored a problem that will come to the fore if Republicans succeed in winning a majority on Tuesday: The party is sorely in need of grown-ups.

When Republicans gained control of Congress 16 years ago, the revolutionaries were eventually convinced by their leaders to cut deals with President Bill Clinton, leading to milestone achievements on the budget and welfare reform.

But there is no Bob Dole in the Republican leadership today; there isn't even a Newt Gingrich. There is nobody with the clout to tell Tea Party-inspired backbenchers when it's time to put down the grenades and negotiate. Rather, there are weak leaders who, frightened by the Tea Party radicals, have become unquestioning followers of a radical approach.

"This is not a time for compromise," House Republican leader John Boehner informed Sean Hannity on the radio on Wednesday. When Hannity mentioned that retiring Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) called it unwise to attempt a repeal of health-care reform, Boehner replied: "I love Judd Gregg, but maybe he doesn't get it. . . . We're going to do everything - and I mean everything - we can do, to kill it, stop it, slow it down."
....................

Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.), the No. 3 House Republican, told radio host Hugh Hewitt recently. "There will be no compromise on repealing Obamacare. There will be no compromise on stopping Democrats from growing government and raising taxes. And if I haven't been clear enough yet, let me say again: no compromise."
..................

The difference now is that, particularly on the Republican side, there are no authority figures to say "no" to the angry, the rude and the violent. With a House leader determined not to compromise, and a Senate leader whose top national priority is the defeat of the president, things won't get any better after Tuesday.

At ‘Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear,’ Thousands — Billions? — Respond

Some excerpts :

The crowds flooded the National Mall for the “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear,” an overwhelming response to a call by Jon Stewart, the political satirist whose comedy show commands a broad, youthful audience of politically engaged Americans. The turn-out clogged traffic, and filled subways and buses to the point of overflow.

And though it was billed as a gathering for civility — a party on a sunny Saturday for people to enjoy thoughtful conversation — for participants it was a serious political affair. Some were canvassing for votes. Others were searching for a message they felt had been lost by Democrats since President Obama was elected in 2008.

"We don’t have any place to turn," said Michelle Sabol, 41, a jewelry designer from Pittsburgh who was wearing a grey cap with a carpenter’s level sewn on top. "Why are these Democrats running away from Obama’s accomplishments? It’s a kick in the gut."

She said that Mr. Stewart and his compatriot, Stephen Colbert, whose show, “The Colbert Report,” airs after Mr. Stewart’s, voiced the bitterness and frustration she felt.

"We came because we feel like this is a safe place to be reasonable," she said.

The rally seemed to be channeling something deep — a craving to be heard and a frustration with the lack of leadership, less by Mr. Obama, some participants said, than by a Democratic party that they saw as timid, fearful, and failing to stand up for the president’s accomplishments.

Don't Throw Out the Bums if You're Voting in Worse Bums

Some excerpts :

Yet the people in a fury are poised to vote back people who are peddling the same old/same old that gave us the lengthy Bush journey into hideous deficits, over borrowing, and the job losses.

The Republicans and tea partiers are all offering: tax cuts, tax cuts! Because we all saw how Bush's tax cuts made for more jobs, right? No, wrong.

The job loss happened in the last years of Bush, because of:

1) the cumulative strain of two wars with borrowed money from China and

2) because of corporations getting tax benefits for moving American jobs to foreign countries (partially because they don't like to pay for health care for their workers, or pay minimum wage) and

3) because Wall Street changed from an entity that invested in actual businesses, and became instead a bizarre gambling casino, where the money made was never anything real, it was Ivy League graduates creating derivatives and credit default swaps and "chopping up debt" and putting it into investments that no one knew they were even in and where the regulators claimed they were first rate investments when they were actually garbage..

These policies are what "mad as hell" people are about to vote back in.

The Republicans and tea partiers want to get rid of regulation! It was the lack of regulation that allowed all these nutty and inexplicable financial "instruments" to explode and almost cause another Depression.

People are furious with the bank bailout. Sure, me too. I'm also angry about the enormous bonuses given to CEO's who allowed their companies to fail in a spectacular way. The whole thing stinks.

But -- I don't know any sensible person or anyone with knowledge of finance who feels it would have been right to just let all the banks fail.

And sprinkle in that some of the tea party candidates are really extreme.

I guess I'm trying to talk to independents here (if any are reading), but just going on the "I'm mad as hell" impulse should not lead you to voting in candidates who want to outlaw all abortion, including rape and incest. Do you want your daughter forced to keep a baby caused by rape, so she can, as Sharon Angle running in Nevada says, "make lemonade out of lemons"?

Angle thinks unemployment insurance means people are lazy. She wants to privatize social security so that that money can participate and be at risk with all the derivatives and gambling apparatus still happening on Wall Street. (She used to talk about privatization, but now doesn't bring it up.)
......................

Most of the anger is about not having jobs. Understandable, it's awful.

But how do you actually create jobs? You really think tax cuts for the rich are the answer? We had that for about the last 6 years of the Bush presidency, and it didn't create jobs, did it? Well that's what you're voting back in. (The stimulus was not a failure, it just didn't fix it all. It helped. Doing nothing would have been much worse.)
...............

But again, the independents who voted for change with Obama -- I understand he hasn't solved it all in 18 months. But you think that's logical to assume he could have? (I was guilty of thinking he could have fixed more, and should have been bolder...but the Republicans' intransigence and the group of Obama haters have made functioning in Washington even harder than usual.)

You think the "tax cuts for billionaires" folks and the "no regulations, the market takes care of it all" snake salesmen are the right next step to take? Are you kidding?
.................

And weirdly that's also what's happening with the anger in our country right now. It's being fanned and supported by oil companies who want to keep us hooked on oil, by Wall Street people who don't want regulation but want things as usual... the anger is being used and manipulated by enormous corporations who are killing the middle class.

And the middle class is voting for these people; their anger is being played with, and they're being urged to support candidates who will make things worse for them.

Come on, independents. Be mad, I understand, I'm mad too. But don't vote for the people who are going to put us on track to do THE EXACT SAME THING AGAIN. With some weird Tea Party extras.

Immigration hard-liners to lead Judiciary?

Some excerpts :

Immigration reform would not only be dead in a Republican House; the policy debate would take a decidedly rightward turn in the House Judiciary Committee, which could become a hotbed of conservative activism on one of the most volatile issues in U.S. politics.

Chairman-in-waiting Lamar Smith (R-Texas) has been an advocate of national Arizona-type immigration laws, implementing a mandatory verification program and revisiting the birthright citizenship guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. Smith’s wingman on the Judiciary Committee would be Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), one of the fiercest critics of illegal immigration, who would chair the immigration subcommittee.

Smith has been on the leading edge of conservative immigration policy since the mid-1990s, but he would have a much larger megaphone as chairman of Judiciary, even if his ideas never get a vote on the floor, because GOP leaders might hesitate to open the chamber to a full-blown immigration debate.

Reform advocates, frustrated by the inability of a Democratic Congress to push serious immigration reform, worry that the debate in the House may swing the opposite way.

Smith is “less interested in getting in the spotlight and more interested in driving immigrants out of the country,” said Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice, a group that supports a path to citizenship for 12 million illegal immigrants. “That’s why I am not looking forward to Mr. Smith coming to Washington.”
................

Conservative immigration groups believe even if Smith is stymied legislatively, his panel could become a national platform for the illegal immigration crackdown movement.
..............

“He does not have to depend on the Senate for that. He doesn’t have to depend on John Boehner,” Beck said.

Smith is not a newcomer to the immigration fight. Capitalizing on Republican enthusiasm in 1994, Smith was the driving force behind one of the most sweeping immigration laws on the books: the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. The law created the label “unlawfully present” to define undocumented immigrants and expanded the number of illegal immigrants who could be deported. That law also created a precursor of this year’s controversial Arizona law, the so-called 287(g) program, which the Obama administration has not heavily promoted.
.....................

[Smith’s would be wingman on the Judiciary Committee] Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) rattled off a list of legislation he’d like to push to the floor: a birthright citizenship bill, legislation to reaffirm states’ right to enact Arizona-like immigration laws, a bill to take away deductions from employers who pay illegal immigrants and legislation to crack down on cities that don’t go after illegal residents.

FORBES MAG : America’s culture seems strong enough to resist the anti-immigrant hysteria emerging throughout Europe. This is one case where la difference between America and Europe may prove a very good thing indeed

.
My Comment :

Excellent article, OK, America is more tolerant than Europe, but what are we going to do with Europe ??? .... or who is going to save Europe from herself ??

Because there are business and demographic forces in favor of immigrants in Europe.

There is strong pressure by European Industrialists and Entrepreneurs to have more Immigrant Youth, more foreign workers in their factories, offices, or locations. This is a great contradiction with the emotions of the populace at large.

Even inside the German Government of Angela Merkel there are many divisions and different opinions about immigrants, because some German cabinet ministers feel the pressure from Business to have more immigrant labor.

Who’s Racist Now? Europe’s Increasing Intolerance

Some excerpts :

With the rising tide of terrorist threats across Europe, one can somewhat understandably expect a surge in Islamophobia across the West. Yet in a contest to see which can be more racist, one would be safer to bet on Europe than on the traditional bogeyman, the United States.
.........................

Muslim attitudes in Europe are not exactly helpful either. European Muslims often seem more interested in breaking the national mold than adding to its contours. More than 80% of British Muslims, for example, identify themselves as Muslims first before being British. This is true of nearly 70% of Muslims in Spain or Germany. Similarly, up to 40% of Britain’s Islamic population believe that terrorist attacks on both Americans and their fellow Britons are justified.

This alienation also reflects an appalling social and economic reality. In European countries immigrants can receive welfare more easily than join the workforce, and their job prospects are confined by education levels that lag those of immigrants in the United States, Canada and Australia. In France unemployment among immigrants–particularly those from Muslim countries–is often at least twice that of the native born; in Britain Muslims are far more likely to be out of the workforce than either Christians or Hindus.

Partly due to a less generous welfare state, American immigrant workers with lower educations have, for the most part, been more economically active than their nonimmigrant counterparts. The contrast is even more telling among Muslim immigrants. In America most Muslims are comfortably middle class, with income and education levels above the national average. They are more likely to be satisfied with the state of the country, their own community and their prospects for success than are other Americans—even in the face of the reaction to 9-ll.

More important still, more than half of Muslims identify themselves as Americans first, a far higher percentage than in the various countries of Western Europe. More than four in five are registered to vote, a sure sign of civic involvement. Almost three-quarters, according to a Pew study, say they have never been discriminated against–something that is definitely not the case in Europe where a majority, according to Pew, complain of discrimination.

Over time, these differences between Europe and America may become even more pronounced. America is becoming increasingly diverse, but it is also growing demographically, and Muslims make up a very small part of that. There’s little fear in America of the kind of Muslim envelopment that appears to threaten a rapidly aging, and soon to be depopulating, Europe.

Of course the U.S. still has its bigoted Islamophobes, just as it has its own small cadre of vicious Islamists. One law of history appears to be that morons will be morons. But America’s culture seems strong enough to resist the anti-immigrant hysteria emerging throughout Europe. This is one case where la difference between America and Europe may prove a very good thing indeed.

The rising tides of xenophobia

Some excerpts :

‘THE APPROACH to build a multicultural society and to live side by side and to enjoy each other . . . has failed, utterly failed.’’ This statement at a political rally last week by German Chancellor Angela Merkel was greeted by a standing ovation from her listeners. She was speaking of how Germany’s immigrant population, mainly Turks, remains socially marginal. Using “we’’ to refer to the nation’s majority population, she continued, “We feel tied to Christian values. Those who don’t accept them don’t have a place here.’’

Hello? The 5 million Muslims living in Germany were on notice, but Merkel’s remarks reverberated across the continent — and the ocean. On both sides of the Atlantic, a rising tide of xenophobic hostility toward immigrants is threatening to swamp the foundation of liberal democracy. As if out of nowhere, American politics, too, shows this. Merkel’s overt affirmation of “Christian values’’ as a note of national identity, for example, has an echo in the sly deriding of the separation of church and state that came last week from Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell.
..........................

In Europe, the pressure comes from Muslim populations, and though American anti-Islamic prejudice has been sparked by the war on terror (and fueled by Fox News), the real point of contention here is the burgeoning Latino population. This year, in fact, marks a demographic tipping point, with more US children born to minorities than to whites. It won’t be until about 2050 that the national percentage of whites will fall below half, but many already feel as though the privilege and power of being part of the dominant group are being ripped away. The political hysteria, including rampant hatred of the black president, that has seized the Republican Party is a result.

We have been here before. Know-Nothing bigotry is nothing new. Chinese, Irish, Jews, Italians, Slavs, and others have had their turns on this hot seat, with African-Americans perennially warned that they “don’t have a place here.’’ Now Latinos, who make up more than 15 percent of the US population (expected to grow to a quarter by 2050), are all but explicitly told that they can never be real Americans.

What Happened to Change We Can Believe In?

Some excerpts :

PRESIDENT Obama, the Rodney Dangerfield of 2010, gets no respect for averting another Great Depression, for saving 3.3 million jobs with stimulus spending, or for salvaging GM and Chrysler from the junkyard. And none of these good deeds, no matter how substantial, will go unpunished if the projected Democratic bloodbath materializes on Election Day. Some are even going unremembered. For Obama, the ultimate indignity is the Times/CBS News poll in September showing that only 8 percent of Americans know that he gave 95 percent of American taxpayers a tax cut.

The reasons for his failure to reap credit for any economic accomplishments are a catechism by now: the dark cloud cast by undiminished unemployment, the relentless disinformation campaign of his political opponents, and the White House’s surprising ineptitude at selling its own achievements. But the most relentless drag on a chief executive who promised change we can believe in is even more ominous. It’s the country’s fatalistic sense that the stacked economic order that gave us the Great Recession remains not just in place but more entrenched and powerful than ever.

No matter how much Obama talks about his “tough” new financial regulatory reforms or offers rote condemnations of Wall Street greed, few believe there’s been real change. That’s not just because so many have lost their jobs, their savings and their homes. It’s also because so many know that the loftiest perpetrators of this national devastation got get-out-of-jail-free cards, that too-big-to-fail banks have grown bigger and that the rich are still the only Americans getting richer.

This intractable status quo is being rubbed in our faces daily during the pre-election sprint by revelations of the latest banking industry outrage, its disregard for the rule of law as it cut every corner to process an avalanche of foreclosures. Clearly, these financial institutions have learned nothing in the few years since their contempt for fiscal and legal niceties led them to peddle these predatory mortgages (and the reckless financial “products” concocted from them) in the first place. And why should they have learned anything? They’ve often been rewarded, not punished, for bad behavior.
......................

Even as the G.O.P. benefits from unlimited corporate campaign money, it’s pulling off the remarkable feat of persuading a large swath of anxious voters that it will lead a populist charge against the rulers of our economic pyramid — the banks, energy companies, insurance giants and other special interests underwriting its own candidates. Should those forces prevail, an America that still hasn’t remotely recovered from the worst hard times in 70 years will end up handing over even more power to those who greased the skids.

NEWSWEEK Poll: Obama Approval Rating Jumps, Democrats Close ‘Enthusiasm Gap’

Some excerpts :

Despite doom-saying about Democrats’ chances in the midterms, the latest NEWSWEEK Poll (full results) shows that they remain in a close race with Republicans 12 days before Election Day, while the president’s approval ratings have climbed sharply. The poll finds that 48 percent of registered voters would be more likely to vote for Democrats, compared with 42 percent who lean Republican (those numbers are similar to those in the last NEWSWEEK Poll, which found Democrats favored 48 percent to 43 percent). President Obama’s approval ratings have jumped substantially, crossing the magic halfway threshold to 54 percent, up from 48 percent in late September, while the portion of respondents who disapprove of the president dropped to 40 percent, the lowest disapproval rating in a NEWSWEEK Poll since February 2010. However, his approval rating, which is notably higher than many recent polls of the president’s popularity, may be evidence of a closing “enthusiasm gap” more than a sea change in voter attitudes, and may not substantially affect Democrats’ fortunes come Election Day. In 1994, NEWSWEEK Polls showed a similar steep climb in President Clinton’s approval between late September and late October, but Democrats still suffered a rout in the midterms.

While two thirds (69 percent) of self-identified Republican voters say they’ve given a lot or some thought to the election, 62 percent of Democrats say they have. This result indicates that the difference in enthusiasm between Democratic and Republican voters may be less stark than some other polls have suggested. A small plurality of registered voters—48 to 43 percent—would prefer that Democrats keep control of Congress. (The poll’s margin of error is 4.3 percent.) The new survey also offers a morsel of evidence that Democrats’ strategy of gaining an edge among early voters might be succeeding. They hold a 10-point lead among those who have already voted, 52 points to 42, but because the sample only represents 92 voters out of the 1,005 polled, Hugick says more polling is necessary for a conclusive picture. Early voting—which has steadily gained popularity in recent years—is expected to have an impact on the election, with three in 10 voters expected to cast ballots before Nov. 2.

Well, folks, it appears we’ve come to the point where it’s not necessary to even feign non-racism any longer. You've seen the ads. Now, witness the draft of an immigration law modeled after Arizona’s SB 1070 “papers, please” law that takes the controversial tied-up-in-court-because-it’s-ridiculous law even further.

Tim Elfrink at Miami New Times (full disclosure: I work for the paper) reports that the law drafted by Florida state representative William Snyder, and supported by GOP gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott, includes a clause that "Even if an officer has 'reasonable suspicions' over a person's immigration status … a person will be ‘presumed to be legally in the United States’ if he or she provides ‘a Canadian passport’ or a passport from any 'visa waiver country.'" Elfrink points out that aside from four Asian countries, all other visa waiver countries are located in Western Europe.

What the…? Yep, that’s right. The Florida law in a nutshell: If you’re a white non-Hispanic, you’re presumed to be in the country legally and don’t need to show any proof. If you belong in the “all others” category, better carry your papers.

Of course, there’s an explanation for such blatant racism, as Snyder told a radio host: "What we're doing there is trying to be sensitive to Canadians. We have an enormous amount of ... Canadians wintering here in Florida … That language is comfort language."

Ah, yes tons of Canadians wintering here in Florida … along with MILLIONS of South Americans. In the biggest tourism destination in the state, Miami, people from South America comprise 52% of the visitors alone. That’s not even counting tourists from Central America and the Caribbean. These are people with plenty of disposable income, and plenty of tourism options. If Florida became a state suspicious of Latinos, they would just take their billions of dollars elsewhere. For a state whose economy relies so heavily on tourism, especially from Latin America, you’d think politicians would be a little bit more worried about making everyone feel comfortable. But that’s what makes it obvious this little clause isn’t about tourism at all. It’s about using every thin veil and pretense possible to try to legalize racial profiling.

Representative Bill Snyder and wannabe governor Rick Scott, you might want to cover up. Your xenophobia is showing.

Obama Takes The Stage At USC Rally

Some excerpts :

"We need all of you to fight on, we need all of you fired up," he said.

He encouraged young voters to do exactly what they did in 2008--get out and vote.  "This is going to be a difficult election," Obama said.

"Their whole campaign strategy is amnesia," he said of the Republicans. "This election is a choice between moving forward and going backward, and I don't know about you, Trojans, but I wanna go forward."
...........

Obama is on a speaking tour of the country's universities to energize the youth vote that helped sweep him into office in 2008.
..................

“If you have not voted yet, you’ve got to get that ballot and put it in the mail,” the President said. “Don't delay. Do it right after this rally. You’ve got to then talk to your friends. You’ve got to talk to your neighbors. You’ve got to make phone calls. You’ve got to knock on doors. You have to make sure that you are as fired up and as excited now as you were two years ago - because the work is not yet done.”

Obama may be right to try to focus on younger voters. Polls show that the President is losing support among those who once voted for him, and young people in particular are lacking enthusiasm.

On Immigration, Are You a Lamar Smith-John Boehner-Steve King Republican?

Some excerpts :

Republicans are making a pretty straightforward wager. They are betting that if they run ads that show menacing looking Latino men, they can scare people into voting Republican. Ads airing by GOP candidates in Nevada and Louisiana are the most explicitly race-baiting ads in American politics in a decade. Even Pete Wilson and Jessie Helms were more subtle in their day. The scary brown-people motif in English ads is being combined with ads in Spanish actually encouraging people not to vote at all.

What is at stake is clear: the future of our immigration system and the welcome that immigrants and Latinos feel in this country. Will we have a system that encourages orderliness, legality, assimilation and basic rights or will we continue to maintain the current system of arbitrary restrictions, limited legality, unfair competition, diminished rights, and massive deportation?

On immigration, the question is not whether you are a Pelosi-Obama Democrat, but whether you are a Lamar Smith-John Boehner-Steve King Republican. When it comes down to it, putting people like Smith-Boehner-King at the helm of national immigration policy is a guarantee of more gridlock and chaos. Rep. Steve King of Iowa -- who makes Jim Sensenbrenner look like Dolores Huerta by comparison -- has called for electrified fencing on the border because he has found it effective for controlling "livestock." And if the recent past is any indication, we can expect any number of anti-Latino voter intimidation dirty tricks in the coming weeks in addition to the ads telling Latinos not to vote. We need to make it crystal clear to voters who favor a fair and humane immigration system that a vote for any GOP House or Senate candidate is a vote for the status quo on immigration or worse.

Latino voters, immigrants, Asian-Americans, younger people, pro-union and pro-faith voters -- and anyone who cares about civil rights, human rights, and labor rights -- have a duty to vote this November on behalf of those who do not have the right to vote and who, if the GOP takes over, may not be able to for many, many years to come.

Gloria Allred: I Smell a Meg Whitman Rat

Some excerpts :

Gloria Allred says she's been sandbagged by Meg Whitman -- in a crass attempt to win the election in spite of the undocumented housekeeper scandal.

Gloria and her client, Nicky Diaz Santillan, Whitman's former housekeeper, were supposed to appear today before the California Labor Commission ... to formally protest Whitman's refusal to pay Santillan for work she did.

But the hearing was mysteriously continued until November 17 ... two weeks after the election. A rep from the state agency tells TMZ ... the hearing was continued because Gloria wanted to amend the legal papers she filed with the Labor Commission.

But Gloria is calling BS, claiming she never asked for a continuance and believes this is a power play to get Meg elected Governor. Gloria says, "If this is how she treats her Latina housekeeper, it does not bode well for how she may treat working people if heaven forbid she is elected."

The Grave Danger of Conservative Blindness

Some excerpts :

What the conservative elite conveniently forgets is that indisputably what made it such catnip to the news media were the controversial placards, many, many, many of which spouted the most unabashedly racist sloganeering this nation has seen outside of a Klan rally. Hyperbole Mr. Douthat? Remember the president gussied up as a coal-black African witch doctor with a bone in his nose? David Duke was more subtle.

Obviously not everyone, not even a majority of Tea Partiers is racist; however there is unquestionably a racist strain in that movement to which the Tea Party, the GOP and intellectual conservatives feign ignorance. The Tea Party brand of right-of-the-GOP conservatism is particularly unsympathetic to the African-American, the poor and the immigrant. More than half surveyed by the New York Times think the government favors blacks over whites, a rate five times higher than that of the general public. From former Tea Party Express spokesman Mark Williams, to former national coordinator of the Tea Party movement Amy Kremer, to white nationalist Billy Roper, to Wood County Tea Party leader and "official supporter" of the KKK Karen Pack, to New York gubernatorial tea partier Carl Paladino, Tea Party leaders have a nasty habit of disseminating nasty, racist emails. (If you'd like to read the report's exhaustive list click here.)

And what about the coincident resurgence of the militia movement? Both fancy themselves hyper-patriots, infused with the Spirit of '76, and amateur constitutional scholars. Intellectual conservatives parse the "good" tea partiers locked and loaded at their rallies just for show, from the "bad" militia members locked and loaded for real, at their peril and ours.

I understand intellectual conservatives' hesitancy to call a spade a spade. Instead of a "no tolerance" policy toward racist speech Tea Party leaders and conservatives shrug and dissemble. They hope to tame the Tea Party dragon, harness its popular anger all the way back into power and then somehow jettison the most dangerous and extreme elements. History is littered with the tragedies of smart people outsmarted by their angry, fanatical allies.

Do people really want a stupid president?
By MICHAEL KINSLEY

Do people really want a stupid president?

Some excerpts :

It’s been hard, though, to figure out how to use this strategy against the first black president, especially one with Barack Obama’s amazing life story. But Michael Gerson — formerly George II’s speechwriter and now a Washington Post columnist — has found a way. In a column Tuesday, he picks up on a few words Obama uttered recently to a group of Democratic donors and calls the president an “intellectual snob.”
..............

Obama said that “facts and science and argument [do] not seem to be winning the day” at the moment “because we’re hard-wired not to always think clearly when we’re scared. And the country is scared.” Gerson riffs on this: “Obama views himself as the neocortical leader —  the defender … of cognitive reasoning. His critics rely on their lizard brains — the location of reptilian ritual and aggression.” In short, he takes this single sentence from the president, deconstructs it thoroughly enough to qualify for tenure in many an English department and calls the result “some of the most arrogant words ever uttered by an American president.” Then he goes to town. Obama’s snobbery “destroys the possibility of political dialogue” (with all those eager Republicans, I guess). He is “abandoning American ideals.” He is “in the throes of pseudo-science.” It’s his fault if “reactionary populism ... targets minorities, immigrants and intellectuals.”
.................

If an intellectual snob is someone who secretly thinks he’s smarter than the average Joe, we’ve probably never had a president — even Harry Truman — who wasn’t one. It’s true, I think, that Obama hides it worse than most. But having a president who thinks he’s smart, and shows it, is a small price to pay for having a president who really is smart. Or would people really rather have a stupid president?

.
Barack Obama has been criticized for not connecting well to White Workers, Old Whites, Whites in small towns - So he has to look more folksy and friendly, relaxed and not formal..- Visiting the areas where these people live would help the Democrats a lot on November 2, midterm elections

It is highly possible that Barack Obama is more disliked for appearing "elitist" and distant than for having a dark color of skin. So he should try to seduce White People in the two weeks previous to the elections.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are asking you to vote—and to help get out the vote—this November

Get in the Game

Obama needs those that "cling to guns and religion" : Obama should go out on a listening tour –a let-them-yell-at-you tour– to relate to White Workers and Old White Folks. Drink a beer with "rednecks" and read the Bible with Evangelicals

.
Obama should ride in a pick-up truck with horns and a shotgun in the back windshield, with those that "cling to guns and Religion" as he once famously said.

OK, Mr Obama does not like beer, beer bars and bowling alleys ( I understand him perfectly and identify with him 100% in those dislikes ) but as long as Obama receives only rotten eggs and tomatoes and not bullets or bombs that would be good for the Electoral Prospects of the Democratic Party.

Obama is not connecting to the Poor Whites, Working Whites, Evangelical Whites ( and other non-White Evangelicals ).

Many people probably do not know who is John Maynard Keynes and do not understand the importance of Deficit Spending, they are ignorant of Economic History, and know nothing about the "Decade of Stagnation" in Japan but they understand a visit of Mr Obama and the drinking of a beer with some "rednecks" while listening to blue-grass music.

It is useless to talk to people about Franklin Roosevelt, the "New Deal" and Economic Recovery, if they have never read a single book, article or page about that mysteryous guy FDR.

You won't find those precious rednecks in the best Universities and the most culturally advanced cities.

Politics is more superficial and emotional than rational and profound. Perhaps Obama is rejected more for his "elitism" than for the color of his skin.

Put on your baseball cap and roll up your sleeves Mr Obama !

Think Again: Global Aging
A gray tsunami is sweeping the planet -- and not just in the places you expect. How did the world get so old, so fast?
BY PHILLIP LONGMAN
NOVEMBER 2010

Think Again: Global Aging

Some excerpts :

It's true that the world's population overall will increase by roughly one-third over the next 40 years, from 6.9 to 9.1 billion, according to the U.N. Population Division. But this will be a very different kind of population growth than ever before -- driven not by birth rates, which have plummeted around the world, but primarily by an increase in the number of elderly people. Indeed, the global population of children under 5 is expected to fall by 49 million as of midcentury, while the number of people over 60 will grow by 1.2 billion. How did the world grow so gray, so quickly?

One reason is that more people are living to advanced old age. But just as significant is the enormous bulge of people born in the first few decades after World War II. Both the United States and Western Europe saw particularly dramatic increases in birth rates during the late 1940s and 1950s, as returning veterans made up for lost time. In the 1960s and 1970s, much of the developing world also experienced a baby boom, but for a different reason: striking declines in infant and child mortality. As these global baby boomers age, they will create a population explosion of seniors. Today in the West, we are seeing a sharp uptick in people turning 60; in another 20 years, we'll see an explosion in the numbers turning 80. Most of the rest of the world will follow the same course in the next few decades.

The Grayest Generation

Eventually, the last echoes of the global baby boomers will fade away. Then, because of the continuing fall in birth rates, humans will face the very real prospect that our numbers will fall as fast -- if not faster -- than the rate at which they once grew. Russia's population is already 7 million below what it was in 1991. As for Japan, one expert has calculated that the very last Japanese baby will be born in the year 2959, assuming the country's low fertility rate of 1.25 children per woman continues unchanged. Young Austrian women now tell pollsters their ideal family size is less than two children, enough to replace themselves but not their partners. Worldwide, there is a 50 percent chance that the population will be falling by 2070, according to a recent study published in Nature. By 2150, according to one U.N. projection, the global population could be half what it is today.

Obama in Command - The Rolling Stone Interview

Some excerpts :

Did you cry?
Whenever I think about my wife, she can choke me up. My wife and my kids, they'll get to me.

[Signaled by his aides, the president brings the interview to a close and leaves the Oval Office. A moment later, however, he returns to the office and says that he has one more thing to add. He speaks with intensity and passion, repeatedly stabbing the air with his finger.]

One closing remark that I want to make: It is inexcusable for any Democrat or progressive right now to stand on the sidelines in this midterm election. There may be complaints about us not having gotten certain things done, not fast enough, making certain legislative compromises. But right now, we've got a choice between a Republican Party that has moved to the right of George Bush and is looking to lock in the same policies that got us into these disasters in the first place, versus an administration that, with some admitted warts, has been the most successful administration in a generation in moving progressive agendas forward.

The idea that we've got a lack of enthusiasm in the Democratic base, that people are sitting on their hands complaining, is just irresponsible.

Everybody out there has to be thinking about what's at stake in this election and if they want to move forward over the next two years or six years or 10 years on key issues like climate change, key issues like how we restore a sense of equity and optimism to middle-class families who have seen their incomes decline by five percent over the last decade. If we want the kind of country that respects civil rights and civil liberties, we'd better fight in this election. And right now, we are getting outspent eight to one by these 527s that the Roberts court says can spend with impunity without disclosing where their money's coming from. In every single one of these congressional districts, you are seeing these independent organizations outspend political parties and the candidates by, as I said, factors of four to one, five to one, eight to one, 10 to one.

We have to get folks off the sidelines. People need to shake off this lethargy, people need to buck up. Bringing about change is hard — that's what I said during the campaign. It has been hard, and we've got some lumps to show for it. But if people now want to take their ball and go home, that tells me folks weren't serious in the first place.

If you're serious, now's exactly the time that people have to step up.

In this crazy election year, the tea partyers have shown surprising strength. But the internal contradictions are so numerous, it's hard to see how their influence will last.

By Tim Rutten
Tim Rutten’s career as a journalist spans more than 30 years at The Times.

This brew just can't last

Some excerpts :

On Friday, the New York Times reported that its pre-election analysis has 33 tea party-backed candidates running in congressional districts that are either leaning Republican or too close to call. Eight "stand a good or better chance of winning Senate seats," the paper says.

If that's correct, the next Congress is going to contain a significant tea party caucus, and that may bring social issue tensions back to the fore.

The problem, as political analyst and George Mason University professor Bill Schneider has pointed out, is that it's "not just that tea partyers are anti-government.... They are anti-politics. They believe that politics is essentially corrupt — that deal-making and compromise are an abandonment of principle. The tea party is a political fundamentalist movement. Like religious fundamentalists, its members do not tolerate waverers (like Sen. Bob Bennett of Utah). They drive out heretics (like Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida). They punish unbelievers (like Rep. Mike Castle of Delaware). And they believe in the total inerrancy of scripture — in this case, the U.S. Constitution as originally written in 1787."

President Franklin D. Roosevelt's epoch-changing New Deal coalition survived only so long as its constituent groups agreed not to discuss the one difference between them they could not reconcile — race. When the civil rights movement made that silent, and shabby, accommodation impossible, the coalition shattered.

The tea party's internal contradictions are so numerous, it's difficult to see its coalition of discontent surviving a single Congress.

2 found guilty of hate crimes related to death of immigrant

Some excerpts :

Scranton, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Two men on trial in a Pennsylvania federal court in connection with the beating death of an undocumented Mexican immigrant have been found guilty on all counts, including hate crimes.

Derrick M. Donchak, 20, of Shenandoah, and Brandon J. Piekarsky, 18, of Shenandoah Heights, had previously been acquitted of murder charges in state court and convicted of simple assault.

But Donchak and Piekarsky were charged in federal court with hate crimes and depriving Luis Ramirez of his civil rights. Donchak also was accused of trying to cover up the July 12, 2008, crime.

"Four people attacked one person because of his race and because they didn't want people like him living in their town," prosecutor Myesha K. Braden said during her closing argument.

Witnesses testified that racist language was used before and during the attack and that Ramirez was kicked in the head repeatedly after falling down. The defendants, they said, didn't want immigrants in their neighborhood and repeatedly ordered Ramirez to leave.

Regarding the cover up, Braden said, "They hatched a plan to leave out the kick, to leave out the race and even to leave out the drinking."
................

Shenandoah police officer Jason Hayes, who was identified as Tammy Piekarsky's boyfriend at the trial, faces federal obstructing justice charges in the investigation, as do former Shenandoah Police Chief Matthew R. Nestor and police Lt. William Moyer.

Nestor, Moyer and Hayes are scheduled to go to trial in January. Nestor, who faces charges in an unrelated extortion case, has resigned.

U.S. District Judge Richard Caputo, who presided over the Donchak/Piekarsky trial in Scranton, is slated to preside over the officers' trials in Wilkes-Barre.

Crystal Dillman, the mother of Ramirez' two children, said she was "ecstatic" with the verdict.

"It's nice to know that there is some justice for Luis," she said.
